Spring Clean Your Career

Spring has officially sprung! The days are longer, the weather is warmer, and flowers are blooming. The spring season is often thought of as a time of rebirth and renewal. Many of us look forward to spring cleaning our homes and closets because it feels great to get organized and to create a fresh start – the same is true for careers. Winter hibernation is over, Q1 has come to an end, and many ON Point clients are ready to plant some fresh ideas, grow their goals, weed out extraneous meetings and activities, and sow the seeds of new relationships and opportunities.

When we go through our closets, we make decisions about what fits and what doesn’t fit. The same approach and decision-making should be applied to your career management strategies. You don’t keep old clothes that don’t fit or are outdated, so why should you keep old goals, processes, ideas, or relationships that no longer “fit” your career? Nothing says springtime like new beginnings and innovation, but it requires hitting the pause button so you can reflect, assess, and decide what stays and what needs a refresh for the new season.

Follow the ON Point Action Plan to put a little “spring” in your career management step.

7 Ways to Spring Clean Your Career

  1. Dust & Polish – time to dust off your resume, executive bio & LinkedIn profile & give them all a polished, updated refresh for spring

  2. Plant New Ideas – evaluate your current position, processes, technology, systems, or marketing campaigns & brainstorm about innovative improvements

  3. Grow Your Goals – springtime is about growth; inject rocket fuel into your goals & challenge yourself to go even further, faster & higher

  4. Weed Out – say “no” to meaningless meetings, resign from a committee that no longer serves you & align your actions & activities to your goals & values

  5. Sow Seeds – your network will always be your networth so reach out, reconnect with old friends, make new connections & get social with your team & colleagues

  6. Dig Deep – look within, take stock & decide if it’s time to explore other professional opportunities, organizations, or industries

  7. Tend to Your Garden – pursue professional & leadership development opportunities so you can continue to grow, learn, develop & improve to get to the next level
