Happy New Year! By now all the confetti is cleaned up, people are back to work, and resolutions are in full swing. However, did you know that tomorrow, January 10, is officially “Quitters Day?” That’s right…the second Friday in January is when more than 75% of people completely abandon their new year’s resolutions. According to a Forbes survey, only 8% of people stay committed to their resolutions for entire month, 5% for six months, and a mere 1% make it last for the entire year. Why do resolutions have such a low success rate? Because resolutions do not yield results.
On January 1st, you can have all the best intentions in the world and make the sincerest of proclamations that this is the year you finally “fill in the blank”…lose the weight, change jobs, find a new relationship, open a business, earn more money, make it to the Final 4, stop a bad habit, or start a healthy one. Unfortunately, even the best of intentions and most heartfelt proclamations are not enough to get you across the finish line. If they were enough then resolutions would have a much higher success rate and would not be associated with a “Quitters Day.” To truly achieve the results you want to achieve in 2025 you need clearly defined goals, a strategic action plan, structure, support, and an abundance of accountability.
Follow the ON Point Action Plan to make sure your resolutions turn into results and that “Quitters Day” is just another Friday for you.
7 Steps to Turn Resolutions into Results
Be Selective – it’s impossible to focus on and achieve 100 goals; identify and prioritize your top 2-3 goals you can laser-focus on
Know Why – understand and connect to a deeper meaning, the true purpose, of why this goal is important beyond simply crossing it off a to-do list
Make it Measurable – instead of abstractly saying you want to lose weight or make more money, attach numbers to it; how much and by when
Break it Down – establish an action plan with mini-milestones, short, mid, and long-term goals to make it more manageable and a lot less overwhelming
Seek Support – success is never a solo sport; create accountability be enlisting a coach, friend, or mentor to help keep you motivated and on track
Assess & Adjust – constantly be evaluating and re-evaluating the plan, progress and performance and make any and all necessary adjustments
Celebrate Successes – don’t wait until you cross the finish line to finally celebrate success, acknowledge the wins along the way of every shape and size
