It’s Officially the Fourth Quarter –Clock is Ticking

Whether it’s in the workplace or the sports arena, the fourth quarter is always an action-packed, adrenaline-driven, nail-biting period of time. It is a sprint to the finish line. It is often when games are won or lost or when businesses soar or come up short. There is a different championship mindset and level of intensity that kicks in for top performers when the clock is ticking and when the stakes are high. Tom Brady leads the NFL with 46 fourth-quarter game-wining drives. LeBron James has the most fourth-quarter points with a total of 4401. And Caitlin Clark recently scored 10 of her 17 points in the fourth quarter to help the Indiana Fever win over the Minnesota Lynx.

The fourth quarter is a game-changer and separates the best from the rest. If you or your team have exceeded goals and objectives in the first three quarters, fantastic! Celebrate those wins but be very mindful of becoming complacent and losing the game. Make sure that level of intensity that was exhibited for three quarters of the year continues until the final buzzer – keep the foot on the gas and do not let up. If you or your team are behind after the first three quarters, then this is the time to dig deep, find another gear, slam on the accelerator, and plan out your winning drive. There is still time to put yourself in position to take a victory lap and to raise the trophy.

Follow the ON Point Action Plan to make the most of, and to maximize, your fourth quarter minutes.

7 Steps to Capitalizing on the Fourth Quarter

  1. Trust & Believe – adopt a winning fourth quarter mindset that ignores the scoreboard & has an unwavering confidence in a successful outcome

  2. Revisit & Review – take a fresh look at the goals & objectives to re-evaluate & re-prioritize what absolutely needs to be accomplished

  3. Select a Strategy – sift through the existing playbook or create a brand-new strategy that is bold & effective enough to win the game

  4. Double the Deadlines – instead of simply shooting for 12/31 as a completion date, establish multiple mini-deadlines to increase momentum

  5. Hyper Focus – like a thoroughbred racehorse with blinders on, the fourth quarter is the time to eliminate distractions & to hyper focus on the finish line

  6. Test the Team – challenge teammates & team members to dig deep, get uncomfortable, be innovative, stretch themselves, dream big & to level up

  7. Cheer & Celebrate – just like how fans can cheer a team to victory with energy & enthusiasm, so can you; bust out the pom-poms, cowbells & body paint
